Types of Computers Based on Capacity: Macrocomputer, Minicomputer, Mainframe Computer and Supercomputer

Types of Computers Based on Capacity:

Capacity of computer refers to the volume of data that a computer system can process.
There are four types of computer based on capacity.
1. Macrocomputer.
2. Minicomputer.
3. Mainframe Computer.
4. Supercomputer.

  • Microcomputer:
Microcomputer is kind of computer that deals with single user. Thebrain of a microcomputer is the microprocessor. It computes all the operation. A micro computer system is formed by adding input/ output capability and memory to the microprocessor. It is also known as personal computer. Example: IBM PC, Apple power PC.

  • Minicomputer:
Minicomputer is less powerful than mainframe computer and wore powerful than microcomputer. Mini computers are mid sized computers, capable of supporting from 4-200 users simultaneously. Mini computers are physically smaller, less expensive all small storage capacity than mainframe.

  • Mainframe Computer:
Mainframe computer can handle hundreds of users at same time because of high speed and large memory. They are designed for distributing system. Bata is physically separate but logically they are treated as one unit. Typical mainframe system looks like a row of large file cabinets and needs a large room.

  • Supercomputer:
Supercomputer is a most powerful computer of present time. It is a kind of computer which is able to handle huge amount of data and scientific computation. It is maintained in a controlled environment. In general it is 5000 times that of a microcomputer speed. Supercomputer can be used in the field like defense, scientific research etc.
