History or evolution of computer
History/ evolution of computer:
- 2400 BC: Abacus,
the first known calculator was invented in Babylonia. It was major step
toward ‘the era of computing’ that was to follow.
- 1614:
John Napier designed the system of moveable rods, which used algorithms to
perform the basic mathematical operations.
- 1822:
Churls Babbage devised “Difference Engine”. In 1842, Babbage came out with
his new idea of “Analytical Engine”. He is the father of computer.
- The mark-I computer(1937-1944): Also
known as Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator, this was the
first fully automatic calculating machine designed by Howard A. Aiken of
Harvard University, in collaboration will IBM corporation.
- 1945:
John von Neumann described a stored architecture, for the fast time even
this architecture was the heart of the computer systems developed
thereafter. He is the father of modern computer.
- 1946:
The Ballistics Research Laboratory of the US came up with the ENIAC
(Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator). It was the first
generate purpose electronic computer.
- 1949: EDSAC
(Electronic Delayed Storage Automatic Calculator) was the first computer
to use stored program. The machine was developed by a group of scientists
headed by Professor Maurice Wilkes, at the Cambridge University
Mathematical Laboratory.
- 1951:
UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer) was the first commercial computer. It
was the first digital computer
which was not ‘one of a kind’.
- 1955: Bell
Labs introduce its first transistor computer. Transistor made computers
energy-efficient.
- 1969:
The US department of defense founded the ARPANET (Advanced Reach Project
Agency Network). It was established with intent of develop a computer
network and is the predecessor of the Internet.
- 1971:
Microcomputer come up micro-processors at Intel, introduced 4-bit 4004.
- 1973: A
minicomputer that was called Xeroy Alto developed.
- 1981:
The American National standards Institute (ANSI) was found.
- 1982:
Intel announced the 80286 processor.
- 1985:
Intel announced the 80386 processor.
- 1990:
WWW (World Wide Web) was found.
- Till
date: The development of newer versions of
computer systems continues.
